Alternative Groundcovers for a Lush Lawn in Washington – Part 2

Many Washington homeowners are discovering that a traditional lawn isn't always the best solution for their property. Between heavy rainfall, shaded areas, poor soil conditions, and increasing maintenance costs, alternative groundcovers continue to gain popularity. In Part 1, we discussed clover, moss, and creeping thyme. In Part 2, we'll explore additional low-maintenance groundcovers that can help create a beautiful, resilient landscape.

Why More Homeowners Are Moving Beyond Traditional Grass and Moving Toward Alternative Groundcovers for Washington State.

A healthy lawn requires regular mowing, fertilization, watering, and weed control. In many parts of Washington, especially properties with heavy shade or drainage challenges, maintaining a lush lawn can become an ongoing struggle. Alternative groundcovers offer practical solutions that often require less maintenance while providing year-round beauty and environmental benefits.

Irish Moss

Soft, Vibrant Green Coverage

Despite its name, Irish Moss is not actually moss. This low-growing perennial forms a dense carpet of bright green foliage and thrives in Washington's mild climate. During late spring and summer, it produces small white flowers that add visual interest to pathways, garden borders, and open spaces.

Irish Moss performs best in areas with partial sun and well-drained soil. Its soft texture creates an attractive lawn-like appearance while requiring significantly less maintenance than traditional turf.

Kinnikinnick

A Native Groundcover for Washington Landscapes

Kinnikinnick is an excellent native groundcover option for Pacific Northwest properties. This evergreen plant spreads gradually, producing glossy green leaves, pink flowers, and attractive red berries throughout the year. The kinnikinnick berry (also known as bearberry or Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is edible. While the bright red berries are safe to eat, they are known for tasting mealy, dry, and lacking flavor when eaten raw.

Because it is native to the region, Kinnikinnick is highly adapted to local conditions. It requires very little water once established and provides excellent erosion control on slopes and difficult planting areas.

Corsican Mint

A Fragrant Alternative to Grass

For homeowners looking to add sensory appeal to their landscape, Corsican Mint offers a unique solution. This low-growing groundcover creates a dense mat of tiny green leaves that release a refreshing mint fragrance when walked on.

Corsican Mint thrives in moist soils and partial shade, making it a great option for many Western Washington properties. It works especially well between stepping stones, along pathways, and in smaller lawn replacement areas.

Sedum Groundcovers

Perfect for Sunny Areas

Sedum varieties are among the toughest groundcovers available. These drought-tolerant succulents come in a variety of colors and textures, creating visual interest throughout the landscape.

Once established, sedums require very little water and maintenance. They are excellent choices for sunny areas where traditional grass struggles to survive during warmer summer months.

Benefits of Alternative Groundcovers

Choosing the right groundcover can provide several long-term advantages:

  • Reduced mowing and maintenance

  • Improved drainage and erosion control

  • Lower water consumption

  • Increased biodiversity and pollinator support

  • Better performance in shaded or difficult growing conditions

  • Year-round visual appeal

Many homeowners find that replacing even a portion of their lawn with alternative groundcovers creates a more sustainable and attractive landscape.

Choosing the Right Groundcover for Your Property

Every property is different. Factors such as sun exposure, drainage, soil conditions, foot traffic, and maintenance preferences should all be considered before selecting a groundcover. Some options excel in shaded environments, while others thrive in full sun or tolerate occasional foot traffic.

Working with a professional landscape designer can help ensure you select the best solution for your specific site conditions and long-term goals.
